So I just noticed that the only thing I've been writing lately about is the auction.   Well, lots of other stuff have been going on too.

My birthday:  [livejournal.com profile] drwex took me out to dinner on my actual birthday.   It was a very good evening. :-)

Dinner and Dancing:  At Asgard and then at HEROES 80's was an absolute blast and I was really grateful to everyone who made it out.

There have been several hangouts, get togethers and social time... I am feeling on a definite upswing in that way right now and I will take it as long as it lasts!

The Fashion Show on Wednesday was a lot of fun but not really my thing.   It took a bit to articulate to myself what was off for me, but I finally figured it out... I may put that in its own post.    [livejournal.com profile] cathijosephine asked to host some people at my place afterwards and that worked out really nicely.

I'm still reading from book to book to book but that has slowed down a little bit because I've been a lot more active in the evenings the last 2 weeks.

The exercise has been going really well but the weight loss has not.   I will probably talk about that more on my weight filter--it's more than a bit frustrating.

There is a longer work post in the mix as well, but the Reader's Digest version is:  My manager is changing departments,  the new woman taking her place was hand picked by her and so far seems OK, there is a large reorg going on in the group as the result of several changes like this and I am wary about the whole thing but trying to be positive.

My coworker is leaving after all... I am really bummed. I'm still thinking I should start 2007 over...

I will be at Diesel tonight along with [livejournal.com profile] ariesd and we would love dinner plans with anyone who would like to join us. We will plan on heading to dinner anytime after 6:30ish.

Mishap #1: The payroll person keeps having a problem printing. Tech B goes up a few times to help her out, but the problem continues re-occur. Finally I ask the Level II Tech to go take a look at it. He comes back laughing. The end user has a hub in her office that both her computers and her printer are connected through to the network. Apparently Tech B told her that the problem was she was "jiggling the wires too much" and put the hub on the floor. It was while it was on the floor that the incidents continued. Why did Level II tech come back laughing? Solution: Original problem was unknown, but where Tech B put the hub on the floor was where the End User puts her handbag each morning. She kept knocking the uplink button on the hub and disconnecting it from the network.

Mishap #2:
End User calls: I moved my phone to my new cube and now the line just rings thru to the operator.
Me: Yes sir, the phone can't just be disconnected from the system. It causes a disruption.
End User: Yes, I remember that now, but I was going on vacation and the move hadn't been done yet.
Me(curious): The network guys are usually pretty good about that... when was the move supposed to happen?
End User: March 3rd.
Me: Well, that is why it wouldn't have been done.
End User: but I was going on vacation... I'm not going to be in the office.
Me(even more curious): um, yeah. But they would have done the move anyway. Can I ask what your concern was?
End User: well, I wasn't going to be in the office.
Me: I understand that, was your phone extension changing?
End User: no, but I'm going to be out of the office.
Me: They can move your phone without affecting your voicemail, sir. You don't have to be here for it to happen.
End User: oh, really? But how would it find its way to the right phone?
Me (in a very patient tone): The messages are not stored on the actual phone. When you access your voicemail you are accessing a central system. That's why you can access your voicemail by dialing into the system from external numbers.
End User: But I'm going to be out of the office.
At this point I gave up and tried to end the conversation. He really thought that if he wasn't here when his phone was moved he was going to loose any and all voicemail from the time he left to the time he got back. And for a while seemed to be trying to convince me that this was the case.

So, one of my desktop techs just gave his notice and the other has taken a permanent position in the company but in a different group.

That will leave me as the only experienced tech on the front lines.  I'm not looking forward to breaking in TWO new people.  Especially with the problems that we have had finding quality people to fill the positions in the first place.  Back in September one of our desktop techs took a position in the Engineering group.  It took us going thru 3 (yes, that's right THREE) contractors to find someone reasonably capable of filling B's shoes.  And he's the one leaving for another company.   To be honest, I'm not entirely unhappy that he is leaving, he has been a bit undependable at times and probably spent more time surfing the web for another job than working on cases.

The other one, A, has been my favorite tech yet and I am really going to feel his absence in more ways than one.  I'm very happy for him (and a little envious) that he is getting a permanent job with the company, but the lab's going to seem rather quiet without him around.  And he has always been someone that I could depend on when I got overloaded. *sigh*  It's very hard to find good people sometimes.

So if anyone knows of someone looking for IT work, specifically desktop support, please let me know.  I would REALLY like to get at least one person in that I know I can depend on.  This is a contract position only, but its a good company and a good way to get in the door.
